Chelsea thumps Manchester United 4-0, Manchester City draw with Southampton to top Premier League

Chelsea thumps Manchester United 4-0, Manchester City draw with Southampton to top Premier League

Jose Mourinho has blamed "incredible defensive mistakes" for his humiliation on his Premier League return to Stamford Bridge where his former side Chelsea routed Manchester United 4-0.

Having held out for 90 minutes at Anfield last week, United conceded the quickest goal in the Premier League this season to Pedro after 30 seconds and were then ripped apart as Gary Cahill (21), Eden Hazard (62) and N'Golo Kante (70) completed the scoring on Monday morning (AEDT).

Most of the goals stemmed from poor defending as Chelsea found ever more ingenious ways to inflict pain on Mourinho.

"We made incredible defensive mistakes and you pay for that," Mourinho said.

"If you score you have a chance and the match would have been different. When you come with a strategy you can't concede a goal like that in the first minute.

"We were coming to have an offensive approach, we wanted to create chances, we showed that after the 1-0.

"The second and the third were counter-attack goals. If we score a goal like we almost did for 2-1 the game would be different."

Marcos Alonso began the unravelling with a defence-splitting pass between De Gea and his central defenders that found Pedro, while Cahill could not believe his luck when the ball fell to him in the area after Chris Smalling failed to clear a corner.

"I couldn't miss from there," said Cahill.

wo up at half time, when United replaced Marouane Fellaini with Juan Mata, Chelsea sat back and waited to hit United on the break with Hazard adding a third after a clever one-two and then Kante driving forward to score his first goal for the club.

That goal would have been particularly difficult for Mourinho to stomach because the former Leicester midfielder met so little resistance from those supposedly charged with stopping him getting into the area.
A downbeat Mourinho struggled to find a positive spin to put on a terrible result. It was only the second time in his Premier League career that one of his sides had conceded four goals.

"You lose three points when you lose 1-0 or 4-0, it doesn't make a difference," he said.

"We need to win matches now to close the gap."

Neither Mourinho nor Chelsea manager Antonio Conte would comment on an incident after the final whistle when the stony-faced Portuguese spent several seconds talking in the Italian's ear.

It happened soon after Conte had whipped up the crowd by gesticulating wildly after the fourth goal went in.

Conte shrugged that he was entitled to ask for more noise.

"If you want to cut my emotion, then I go home and change my job," he said.

United's misery was completed when Mourinho also revealed that he feared injured defender Eric Bailly, who limped off early in the second half, had suffered serious knee ligament damage.

Iheanacho makes instant impact as City draw with Saints

Meanwhile, Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League on goal difference after coming from behind to draw 1-1 with Southampton at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola's side, which began the season with 10 straight victories, has now gone five games without a win in all competitions, equalling the Spaniard's worst run as a manager when he was at Barcelona.

"You can win 10 times and then you are not able to win five times," said Guardiola. "I have to discover the reason why and I am going to find that.

"We had problems creating our build-up. There is a difference between the first and second half. Unfortunately, we could not win."
It could have been even worse for City after it gifted Southampton the lead when a wayward pass from John Stones put Nathan Redmond in on goal after 27 minutes.

Moments later Stones thought he had atoned by bundling the ball into the net but his goal was disallowed for a Sergio Aguero offside.

Guardiola reacted to the poor first half by replacing Kevin De Bruyne with Kelechi Iheanacho, who made an immediate impact by scoring from close range after Fernandinho found Leroy Sane with an exquisite crossfield pass.

Saints remained a threat on the break and Claudio Bravo saved well from Charlie Austin on 74 minutes while Aguero went close at the other end, where Raheem Sterling was a constant threat as City pushed for the elusive winner.

City, who handed starts to Vincent Kompany and Sergio Aguero, were behind in the 27th minute after John Stones' poor back pass gifted Nathan Redmond the opener.

Stones thought he's redeemed himself moments later when bundling Kevin De Bruyne's free-kick into the back of the net, but it was ruled out after Aguero was adjudged to be standing in an offside position from the ball into the box.

However, City were back on level terms after the break when substitute Kelechi Iheanacho, on at half-time for Kevin De Bruyne, swept home Leroy Sane's cross from close range.

There was a renewed hope around the Etihad after the goal and City pushed hard for a winner right until the death, but Southampton held on for a superb point.

The result means City go back to the top of the table on goal differenc, while Southampton, who are now unbeaten in five league matches, stay eighth.

Man Utd win Football for Freedom tournament

Man Utd win Football for Freedom tournament

Man Utd coach hails U16 tournament, which educated players on slavery and trafficking

Ahead of Manchester United first-team's draw at Anfield on Monday night, the club's Under-16s were triumphant on Merseyside as they won the Premier League's Under-16 International Football for Freedom Tournament.

United denied Fulham a third successive victory in the tournament after a penalty shootout at Liverpool FC's academy, with their coach lauding the tournament as "fundamental to player development".

Nine English teams from Category One academies (United, Fulham, Chelsea, Derby County, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and West Bromwich Albion) were joined by three European sides (Anderlecht, Borussia Dortmund and Porto) in the competition held in support of Anti-Slavery Day 2016.
As well as the on-pitch learning from competing against their peers from around the country and abroad, the players were educated on the history of slavery and human trafficking.
Julia Immonen and Al Bangura with the Man Utd U16 captain
This featured a talk by Julia Immonen, the founder of Sport for Freedom.
Also they heard from Al Bangura, the former Watford player, and now ambassador for Sport for Freedom, who gave them first-hand experience of what it was like to be trafficked.

"Football gave me freedom," Bangura said. "I was trafficked from Guinea when I was 14 years old. When I looked at a football I felt free. Football gave me hope."

Anderlecht, Man Utd and Fulham topped their respective groups and were joined in the semi-finals by West Bromwich Albion, as best runners-up.
Fulham topped Group C, ahead of Derby County, Liverpool and FC Porto
A shootout win over the Baggies maintained Fulham's hopes of a hat-trick of titles, but after a goalless draw in the final, they lost 5-4 from the spot.

"Winning was important to us but, more importantly, the experience of tournament football is a fundamental part of our players' development, win or lose," Man Utd Under-16s coach Neil Ryan told ManUtd.com.

Martyn Heather, Head of Education at the Premier League was pleased with how the tournament went.

"The education of our Academy players is vitally important, so to be able to link an international football tournament with the opportunity to grow and develop our young players' knowledge on historical and current affairs can only benefit all involved," he said.

West Brom head coach Tony Pulis tips Liverpool for title race ahead of  Saturday's Anfield trip

Tony Pulis believes West Bromwich Albion face the toughest of tests against Liverpool on Saturday with particular respect for their attack.

"Their front five are exceptional," the head coach told wba.co.uk. "They are all match-winners. They can do something off the cuff. They could win the title."

West Brom have no fresh injury concerns ahead of Saturday's 5.30pm BST kick-off, although Saido Berahino has been put on an individual fitness regime and is unlikely to start, while Jonny Evans is suspended.
For Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp has close to a fully-fit squad, with Georginio Wijnaldum (hamstring) back in training having missed Monday night's draw with Manchester United.

"In this moment there's nothing really to moan about," Klopp told liverpoolfc.com. "Nobody is ruled out and Gini [Wijnaldum] is on the way back, so that's good.

"If nothing happens today or tomorrow, we have quite a big squad to make the choice."

Atletico Madrid midfielder Tiago: Champions League win is my dream

Atletico Madrid midfielder Tiago: Champions League win is my dream

Atletico Madrid midfielder Tiago has said his team will keep fighting to win the Champions League -- but warned that the ambition must not turn into an obsession.

Atletico have been beaten by city rivals Real Madrid in two of the last three finals and have fallen at the last hurdle three times in all.

Speaking to Marca, former Portugal international Tiago said that it was his dream to win the competition but stressed that it was important for Atletico to enjoy themselves.

"To win a Champions League is so difficult, and it cannot become an obsession for us," he said. "You must enjoy the journey and all the games.

"The great thing about the Champions League is you play against all the best teams, and we love to compete against the best. We have not managed to win it yet, but we will keep on trying until one day it finally arrives."

Tiago and the Atletico midfield will be looking to overrun their Real counterparts in Tuesday's UCL quarterfinal second leg, just like they did in their 4-0 win over Los Blancos earlier this season. Gonzalo Arroyo Moreno/Getty Images

The midfielder signed a one-year extension to his Atletico contract in May, and said: "I'm 35, and when this season is over I'll be 36.

"I'm closer to the end of my career and that is why I'm going to take advantage of the time I'm on the pitch and enjoy every minute.

"I'm enjoying myself, but the day that I know I cannot play at this level, I will be the first to raise my arm and say so."

He said he was considering a career in coaching once his playing days had drawn to a close and said he believed his career as a midfielder could help him.

"There is a big link as you must be aware of everything -- defence, attack, the organisation of the team," he said.

"You are the centre of the team. I believe this helps towards being a coach in the future."

Thiago said he had "learned so much" from club coach Diego Simeone, explaining: "If you believe in what you are doing, the players will follow you.

"He has brought a union to Atletico, made the players feel secure and relaxed."

Cristiano Ronaldo wants to stay with Real Madrid 'for many years' to come

Cristiano Ronaldo wants to stay with Real Madrid 'for many years' to come

Cristiano Ronaldo said he hopes to stay at Real Madrid for "many years" as he accepted an award as the best player in the Champions League last season.

The 31-year-old led Madrid to European glory for the second time in May, scoring 16 goals and converting the winning penalty in the final against Atletico.

Ronaldo, who went on to lead Portugal to the European Championship a few weeks later, said he has no desire to leave the Bernabeu.

"I've won the Champions League and the Euros, it's a beautiful moment in my career and my sporting life," he said at the AC Hotel La Finca in Madrid. "It just makes me want to keep working hard for this club.

"It's my dream to keep playing for Real Madrid and I really want to stay here for many years because the club holds a special place in my heart."

Ronaldo's 51 goals in all competitions last season took him past Raul as Real Madrid's all-time top scorer, a feat he claimed even he did not believe he could accomplish.

"I never expected to reach these numbers," Ronaldo said. "I knew that Real Madrid is the biggest club in the world, but I didn't expect to beat the numbers of [Alfredo] Di Stefano and Raul."

The award was voted on by readers of Marca and La Gazzetta dello Sport in a series of polls throughout the Champions League.

Sergio Aguero: Manchester City will find it difficult to stop Lionel Messi

Sergio Aguero: Manchester City will find it difficult to stop Lionel Messi

Sergio Aguero says even Pep Guardiola may struggle to come up with a plan to stop Lionel Messi when Manchester City face Barcelona on Wednesday.

Former Barca boss Guardiola faces his old club in the Champions League, with Messi fit again after he returned from a groin injury to score in the Catalan side's 4-0 victory over Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday.

Aguero is looking forward to coming up against his Argentina teammate and close friend but knows his recovery could spell trouble for City's hopes of securing a result.

"Playing against Messi will be something special," Aguero is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror. "We are the same nationality and we are friends too. For that reason I didn't want to get Barcelona in the draw but sometimes fate plays a part and there's nothing you can do.

"I know all about him and of course so does Guardiola -- but then when it comes to Barcelona everybody in the world knows about all their players, so it doesn't mean so much.

"He will be difficult to stop, I know that from experience. All we can hope is that he has a bad day and our defence plays the game of its life. It's that difficult because Leo is the best in the world."

City thrashed Borussia Monchengladbach 4-0 in in the Champions League this season, but a 3-3 draw against Celtic means Guardiola's side could need at least a point in Barcelona if they are to have any chance of topping the group.

Aguero says City are desperate for success in the Champions League, having reached the semifinals last season, but understands why they are not favourites for the competition.

"The Champions League is our unfinished business," he added. "We all want to win it. In the past we didn't do well but last year was different and we must raise our game and give everything for our fans this year. We've made a good start, we want to continue.

"We just want to concentrate on ourselves in this competition. It's normal that Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern [Munich] are the favourites to reach the final but there's no reason why City cannot be there. Winning the Champions League would mean everything to us. It would be a dream come true and total madness for everyone if we did it."

Real Madrid beef up security for Legia Warsaw Champions League clash

Real Madrid beef up security for Legia Warsaw Champions League clash

Security for Tuesday's Champions League Group game between Real Madrid and Legia Warsaw at the Bernabeu is being heightened amid concerns over potential trouble involving visiting ultras.

The Group F match has been deemed "high risk" by authorities in Madrid after previous serious problems involving some of Legia's supporters.

Marca reported that Polish police are in Madrid to help with preparations, and that the total number of security personnel will be increased to around 2,200 police officers and security guards.

A heavy police presence is planned for city centre locations such as Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol, where visiting supporters often gather.

A security source told ABC special precautions were being taken and said: "There is a lot of concern about this case.

"Normally, the decision on a high risk game is taken four or five days before the game. In this case, Real Madrid and the government have been speaking for more than two weeks ahead of the game against Legia."

Following racist behaviour and crowd disturbances during Legia's home defeat to Borussia Dortmund in September, UEFA ordered a full stadium closure for their next home game, against Madrid on Nov. 2.

Legia's 4,000-ticket allocation for this week's game at the Bernabeu is sold out, with Spanish media reports saying around 300 suspected ultras may have official tickets.

Extra searches are being planned to stop fans bringing flares or fireworks into the ground. Madrid have also attempted to stop any Legia fans sitting elsewhere in the stadium by making impossible to purchase match tickets online using a Polish bank card.

But Katarzyna Cenian, the vice-president of a Polish Madrid fans group called White Eagles, told AS she was aware of people who had been able to find ways around the restrictions.

"We know that people have bought tickets through family members from other countries, using non-Polish bank cards," Cenian said.

"A kid was at the ticket office the other day and bought six, even though he said he was Polish, as he wanted to make sure he had no trouble getting in."

Liverpool vs. Manchester United now means Jurgen Klopp vs. Jose Mourinho

Even before the endlessly mind-numbing debate over the role of Wayne Rooney in England's next World Cup debacle, the hype storm had been swirling.

Liverpool vs. Manchester United is always going to buffet the fan bases but this season's first meeting has riveted the soccer world beyond the usual tribalistic enmity.
There are two compelling reasons for this: Jurgen Klopp and Jose Mourinho.

With all due respect to Pep Guardiola, The World's Greatest Manager As Long As He Had Lionel Messi, Klopp and Mourinho are the Premier League's most outsized, charismatic and gloriously unhinged personalities and on Monday they face off in the latest installment of a blood feud that began in 1894 (slightly before Tottenham last finished ahead of Arsenal in the league).

No wonder both men have been careful not to add hot air to the howling winds already hammering Anfield ahead of the match.

On the face of it, Liverpool are the clear favorites despite being only three points ahead of United in the table. Klopp's Kops have gotten off to a furious start and have won four games in a row, often blowing away opponents with their breathless tempo and unremitting intensity.

Buoyed by the pace and panache of Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana, they are doing something that is antithetical to Mourinho's very soul: scoring goals for fun. 18 in seven league games overall, including nine in two at home.

This has the "Football Einsteins," as Mourinho has lovingly referred to the English media, falling over themselves to profess their adoration for Kloppball and the bespectacled mastermind with the wild-eyed look and immaculate hair weave behind it. If Mourinho represents the stodgy, conventional, anti-entertainment way of playing, then Klopp is his antithesis, whose lung-busting, uber-pressing style sets pulses racing.

It has taken a full year of Klopp mania -- Monday will mark the anniversary of his first game in charge of Liverpool -- to imprint his tactical and technical philosophy on his team and what better way to show off that impressive evolution than to thump their most bitter rivals.

But the Anfield faithful are painfully aware that no one knows how to spoil a party quite like Mourinho. He might well be the Ted Cruz of the Premier League.

There is probably no darker day in Liverpool's recent history than Apr. 26, 2014, when the peripatetic Portuguese brought his stuttering Chelsea side to Anfield and forced Steven Gerrard into "The Slip" that famously derailed the Reds' most serious title challenge in an ice age.

As the then-Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, on the verge of canonization at the time, pointed out, Chelsea parked "two buses" on the Anfield pitch in a cynical and calculated attempt to strangle the game.

Then there was the Blues' egregious time-wasting, an approach best illustrated
when the ball ended up in Mourinho's arms in the sixth minute as he stood in his technical area. Instead of simply handing it to a Liverpool player for a throw-in, he waited until Steven Gerrard and Jon Flanagan both tried to wrest it from his grasp and then executed a behind-the-back pass to make them scamper.

But the image seared into every crestfallen Liverpool fan's brain that day is one that took place after the final whistle. There was Mourinho, his face transformed into a mask of maniacal glee, racing down the touchline and pounding his chest in front of the traveling supporters, as a funereal silence engulfed the rest of the stadium.

So no matter how much he has tried in the run-up to Monday's game to present himself as the consummate diplomat -- except for that pesky possible FA charge over his pre-game remarks on the officiating -- even proclaiming how much he is looking forward to "testing himself against a big opponent," Mourinho knows he'll still be viewed as the evil autocrat leading Liverpool's most hated foe onto the hallowed ground of Anfield.

And, of course, Jose will relish the role, as well as the fact that, a mere seven league games into his Old Trafford reign, United has been written off as an absurdly expensive collection of talent in search of an identity that still has three fewer points at this stage of the season than last year's Louis van Gaal shambles.

Mourinho's boldest tactical move so far has been to strip his starting line-up of its talismanic captain and scapegoat-in-chief Rooney, whose laborious play for club and country has reduced him to a series of cameos from the bench in recent weeks.

Klopp, in keeping with his irrationally exuberant attitude, made a point of praising Rooney last week as a "world-class player." It is tempting to imagine how the German would have handled the "Wazzexit" situation had he been in a position to do so, which, according to Sir Alex Ferguson's most recent book on management, he could have been.

Apparently, when Fergie was thinking of stepping down from his throne after almost 27 years of ruthless hegemony, he approached Klopp about the possibility of managing United, a "big honor" that Klopp spurned to remain at Borussia Dortmund. Oh, how the slope of United's plummet might have been transformed if only the German had said "Yes, Sir Alex." Instead, the Old Trafford job went to David Moyes and, well, the rest is mathematically painful.

But I digress. Even without the drive and dynamism that Rooney once provided, United still has plenty of attacking firepower and sharp-elbowed physicality to trouble Liverpool. Despite Klopp's defensive overhaul, Liverpool remain vulnerable to speed on the flanks, which United possess in abundance with Marcus Rashford and Antony Martial.

They also have a nasty habit of conceding from corners and set pieces and neither of Liverpool's goalkeepers, the former incumbent Simon Mignolet or 23-year-old German Loris Karius, who Klopp has recently preferred, inspires confidence when it comes to catching or punching aerial balls and United, with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marouane Fellaini and Paul Pogba, have the length and power to punish them. Given that Liverpool seemingly last kept a clean sheet during the Kenny Dalglish era, Mourinho's men are going to score.

"We know about United's physical strength and we cannot do anything to change it," said Klopp. "All we can do is try to avoid situations where they can use it... If you have one second where you don't concentrate, you can lose the game in that second. "

Coming early in the season, the game will not make or break either manager's campaign but each could do with a positive statement of intent. For Mourinho, this is the start of a hellish six-day day stretch that sees United play at Liverpool, then host Fenerbahce in the Europa League before their manager makes his first return to Chelsea since his spectacular implosion last season.

Fittingly, it was Klopp's inaugural league win as a Liverpool manager last October, a 3-1 victory at Stamford Bridge, that presaged Mourinho's downfall with the traveling Kop army serenading him: "You're not special anymore." He was Abramovich-ed two months later.

Despite that stint in the unemployment line for the highly paid, Mourinho doesn't bear a grudge toward Klopp, as he does to just about every other manager in the league. "For Jurgen, I am not a close friend because football doesn't allow that, but he is a guy I like a lot," Mourinho has said of his opposite number.

Well, up to a point. After that loss Stamford Bridge, Mourinho moaned about Klopp's hyperactive touchline antics and his constant ranting at the fourth official. Like most things, the Liverpool manager took the criticism in his ebullient stride.

"I have to accept that not everyone is 100 percent happy with my performances on the sidelines," he said. "But actually now at Anfield with the new stand, there is much more space for all of us."

It must drive Mourinho batty how beloved and successful Klopp has become in his short time at Liverpool, culminating in him being named Manager of the Month for September. Asked for his opinion on that, Mourinho told the "Football Einsteins" that he had "nothing to say."

That could bode ill for Liverpool because it means, for the first time since Rooney was actually dangerous as a soccer player, Mourinho may do his talking on the pitch.

Barcelona star Andre Gomes speaks about playing with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo

Barcelona star Andre Gomes speaks about playing with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo

The Portuguese midfielder had the perfect reply to the Messi-Ronaldo comparison

Andre Gomes has been astonished by Messi’s skills at training

Andre Gomes is one of the few players in the world to have played with both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portuguese international took some time to reflect on the experience of playing with two of the greatest players of our generation. The Barcelona midfielder could not stop praising the Argentine maestro’s skill and brilliance in practice.

The Portugal international joined Barcelona in the summer transfer window for a huge sum of €55 million and Gomes has been left stunned with Lionel Messi’s ‘invention’ and creativity in training.

Andre Gomes spoke about his astonishment at the ability of Lionel Messi to conjure something miraculous out of nothing in training every day. Speaking to L'Esportiu de Catalunya, the Portuguese midfielder said:

"Everyone knows that Messi is very, very good. He does things in games that you cannot explain; he just knows different things and can do it.

"In training it is a show, because every day he can invent something new. You think you're used to it, but there is always one day you go to the dressing room surprised by something he has done.

"When asked about how he compared Lionel Messi to his international team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, Gomes refused to be drawn into the debate saying:

"I think they are different players, the two best players in the world in recent years," he added. "I do not like to say which one I think is better.

"What I like to say now is that I'm the only player who has Messi and Cristiano as team-mates and I enjoy playing with both."

Currently the only active player in the world who is playing with Messi and Ronaldo, Gomes should really consider himself lucky to have the opportunity of playing with the two legends.
The Portuguese star was the biggest signing made by Barcelona this season, but he has found opportunities

hard to come by in the star-studded Barcelona team. However, now with Ivan Rakitic injured, the Barcelona midfielder will be looking to make the most of his opportunities.

Real Madrid given permission to begin €400M revamp of Santiago Bernabeu

Real Madrid given permission to begin €400M revamp of Santiago Bernabeu

The eleven time European Champions have got the green light to go forward with their Santiago Bernabeu revamp plans.

                                                               It’s a sight to behold

Real Madrid Football Club's stadium Santiago Bernabeu is set to undergo renovation after the club's €400 Million revamp plan has been approved according to reports from yahoo.com and Goal. The eleven time European Champions had attempted to remodel the famous football venue several times before but were not given permission by the city and the court.

The last time that the Santiago Bernabeu, which is Real Madrid's home since 1947, went through a major revamp was before the World Cup in 1982. According to the plans, the Spanish giants are planning to get a retractable roof to cover the entire arena and also a light display to cover the outside of the structure. Several other changes are also expected to be made but these two remain the major restructuring that will take at the stadium.

The total number of seats are expected to remain the same even though the seating arrangements are planned to be changed. The club's agreement with the city doesn't allow them to increase the size of the structures that are already in place.

So, Madrid will have to rearrange the existing constructions in order remodel the stadium. Some of the offices inside the Bernabeu will have to be moved to the club's team base in Ciudad Real Madrid, which is in the outskirts of the Spanish city.

The plans for the revamp were originally released in 2014, but the city and the court were against the idea. It is now that Real Madrid is finally getting the permission to go forward with their two-year-old plan. The club doesn't want to waste any more time and the restructuring work is set to begin next year. The estimated cost for executing the whole plan is about €400 Million according to Real Madrid club president Florentino Perez.

Even though Real Madrid will have to pay a lot for the revamp of the Santiago Bernabeu, Perez believes that the club will be able to recoup almost the full amount through the stadium's naming rights. The 69-year-old Spaniard also said that the stadium will be keeping its name Bernabeu but could be adding a surname.

"We will see a dramatic transformation of the Santiago Bernabeu. This stadium is one of the emblematic icons of our city and we want to make it one of the best stadiums in the world and the undisputed symbol of the strength of our capital.”

“With this agreement, we will start a process of modernization and transformation that will convert the stadium into an avant-garde architectural icon. This stadium will act as an economic and touristic invigorator and will contribute to strengthening the image of our city", Real Madrid president Florentino Perez said when announcing the deal.

The Santiago Bernabeu is already one of the largest and most iconic football stadiums in the world, and this revamp will be adding to its dignity and uniqueness. The Los Blancos fans will be eager to see their home getting such a big modification.

La Liga 2016/17: Casemiro says he will never play for Barca; chooses Ronaldo over Neymar

La Liga 2016/17: Casemiro says he will never play for Barca; chooses Ronaldo over Neymar

Casemiro throws light on his future, his teammates and more.

Casemiro has become Real Madrid’s midfield engine

Carlos Henrique Casemiro is one of the hottest names in the football fraternity right now. The major reason for his rise within news outlets is the fact that Real Madrid have gone into a drawing slump ever since he got injured.
Indeed, the Los Blancos have drawn four games in four in his absence. It seems that for all the money they have spent over the years to purchase flashy players, without a not-so-charismatic player to do the dirty work, it is pointless.

No future outside Real Madrid

When asked about the possibility of representing Madrid’s bitter rivals, Barcelona, in the future, he opined that it was impossible since he is a Real Madrid supporter. "I'll never play in Barcelona because in Spain I am a Real Madrid supporter," he said.

"Real Madrid is much more than I expected. I love waking up in the morning and going to Valdebebas [Madrid's training base],” the 24-year-old added.

The Brazilian also went on to state how he loved the friendly environment within the club. "I love being with the players, joking, working, learning. I try to live football every day. Real Madrid is my life today."

Cristiano Ronaldo or Neymar?

The former Porto loanee was then queried with comparisons between Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo. The Brazilian midfielder was, as expected, very diplomatic in his approach and answered with the following words, "Neymar's career, there is still more to come. But all the football that Cristiano Ronaldo has done over the last 10 years is to remember for a lifetime. Neymar has everything to get it.”
The former Sao Paulo starlet then went on to state that his Real Madrid team-mate was sure to win the prestigious Ballon d’Or trophy come the next gala, "[But] Cristiano is going to win the [Ballon d'Or]."
Finally, when quizzed about the references he looks for in his position, he went on to name some of the best players—according to himself—in the defensive midfield role, "The best players in my position are [Sergio] Busquets, Thiago [Alcantara], Gabi, Xabi Alonso," he said.

Casemiro has established himself as a starter for Real Madrid. Even though he is renowned for making rough and untimely challenges while also being guilty of mindlessly running around, leaving his zone unmarked, his importance for the Galacticos can’t be overstated.

Indeed, his presence always brings forth doubts within many people’s mind as to whether Zidane’s men could do better, attacking wise, without him against the smaller teams. If the last four matches are anything to go by, the answer is an astounding no.

La Liga 2016/17: Gerard Pique announces retirement plans after 2018 World Cup due to excessive criticism

La Liga 2016/17: Gerard Pique announces retirement plans after 2018 World Cup due to excessive criticism

Allegations over intentionally trimming the Spanish national flag off his jersey have led to Pique quitting the Spanish squad

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has shocked the world of football by announcing his plans to retire from international football. The Spanish centre-back copped widespread criticism for his trimmed jersey in Spain’s most recent FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Albania and has announced that he will quit La Furia Roja after the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Pique has long been viewed as a contentious figure for the national side, despite being instrumental in Spain winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2012 European Championship. The Barcelona centre-back has been outspoken about his views on Catalan independence from Spain, leading many to question his commitment to the national cause.

The latest controversy surrounding Pique involved him trimming the short sleeves of the Spain jersey, which includes the part that bears the design of the national flag. However, Pique produced proof after the match that the shirt he trimmed did not have said design.
He announced his retirement plans, saying “I have tried everything, but I can't bear this anymore, today's issue of the sleeves is the straw that breaks the camel’s back. They've managed to make me lose the excitement of coming here and although after Russia I'll only be 31, I'll leave.”

The Royal Spanish Football Federation announced their support for Pique with the following statement:
Regarding the controversy generated due to the footballer Gerard Piqué modifying his jersey, the RFEF wishes to clear the situation about the long-sleeve jersey used does not contain the country's colours
The Royal Spanish Football Federation wishes to show its support to the international footballer Gerard Piqué about the controversy regarding the cut made on his jersey in the match against Albania.
On the contrary to what some malicious comments where the Spanish player was accused of cutting the sleeves of the jersey to avoid wearing the band with the national colours. In this regard, the RFEF wishes to explain that said band on the Adidas jersey only exists in the short sleeve version, and not on the long sleeve, which is the one Piqué used in the match. The absence of the bands can be seen on the intact version of the jersey worn by teammate Sergio Ramos, who did use the long sleeve.

Gerard Piqué cut the sleeve with the sole aim of playing more comfortably, the same way other players have done on many occasions.

The unjustified criticisms towards Gerard Piqué have provoked the player to think of leaving the Spanish National Team after the Russia World Cup.

Manchester United’s £600m squad is most expensive in history – report

Manchester United’s £600m squad is most expensive in history – report

Manchester United’s current squad is the most expensive ever assembled, with the world record purchase of Paul Pogba having taken their spending to more than £600m – according to research from the CIES Football Observatory.
The appointment of José Mourinho as manager in the summer sparked a new spending spree at Old Trafford, with Eric Bailly and Henrikh Mkhitaryan joining £93.2m Pogba as the club’s new signings. United also secured Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain, although the Swede’s estimated salary of around £10m a year makes him the highest-paid player in the country.

CIES has calculated that takes United’s overall spending on transfers and wages over the £600m mark – more than £160m than they had invested this time last year. Real Madrid had previously been the most expensive in history at £429m, with that figure having increased by more than £100m to £550m. Manchester City are third on £530m having purchased John Stones, Claudio Bravo, Nolito and Leroy Sané, among others, this summer.

English clubs are heavily represented in the remainder of the top 10, with Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool all listed. Tottenham, Everton, West Ham and Southampton also make it into the top 20, while last season’s Premier League champions Leicester are down in 27th on £114m.

Manchester City await news on Bacary Sagna after injury on France duty

Manchester City await news on Bacary Sagna after injury on France duty

Manchester City must wait for Bacary Sagna to return from international duty before assessing the extent of the injury he suffered with France.

Sagna, 33, picked up a suspected hamstring injury in giving away an early penalty when fouling Bulgaria's Georgi Milanov. France went on to win the World Cup qualifier 4-1, but Sagna was forced off in the 27th minute.

The right-back, who has started four Premier League games under Pep Guardiola, is expected to return to City on Saturday for scans.

"Before the penalty I accelerated and I think I've torn it a little bit," Sagna said after the game. "I'll have exams tomorrow.

"I do not know if it's serious."

Pep Guardiola's managerial style criticised by Holger Badstuber

Bayern Munich defender Holger Badstuber has criticised Pep Guardiola for not showing any interest in him during his time at the Bundesliga club.

Although Badstuber spent much of the three years of Guardiola's reign sidelined by injury and despite the Catalan branding him one of the best central defenders in the world, the 27-year-old says he is only now starting to realise how he almost felt abandoned.

Under Carlo Ancelotti, Badstuber is still not playing due to injury, but he says he is at least talking to the coach.

"Our current coach likes to exchange opinions with the players, and so the conversation goes back and forth,'' he told Sky Deutschland.

"That's good too. With Pep, it was different. I would have to approach him because if I want to have a discussion then I will go looking for it

"Of course it gives you a good feeling when the coach shows an interest. It was a bit different with our previous coach.''

Badstuber was unavailable for almost half of Guardiola's reign as Bayern coach, but he hopes to make his first appearance of the season shortly after the international break, having returned to training following his latest injury setback.

"There are some really crap phases in life, but I accept that,'' Badstuber said. "But I never thought about [retiring] because I know what I get out of football.''

Wayne Rooney: I'm not 20 anymore but 'I have qualities that can help' England

Wayne Rooney still dreams of ending his international career on a high, despite the England captain being dropped to the bench in Slovenia.

The country's most capped outfield player and all-time top scorer is to be reduced to a watching brief in Ljubljana after interim boss Gareth Southgate took the decision to drop the 30-year-old.

Rooney has struggled for form and a regular place in the Manchester United lineup recently, with a smattering of fans going as far as to boo the Three Lions captain during Saturday's straightforward win against Malta at Wembley.

It was a reaction Rooney claimed not to have heard -- an assertion some may question the credibility of, yet the fact he answered it at all was remarkable.

Rooney, against Southgate's initial advice, wanted to speak at the prematch news conference, giving candid, direct and forthright answers to broadcasters and writers several hours after news of his omission leaked out.

"I wouldn't say brutal," he said. "I think there are many people playing in the Premier League and around the country who would only dream of being part of an England squad.

"I've done it 117 times, but of course a time comes where there might be a bit of a change, but all I can do is keep working and turning up, so that I am ready when called upon.

"I understand this is part of football. It is something which you have to go through and I am big enough to deal with it."

Professionalism should not be mistaken for accepting this is the beginning of the end, though.

"I am 30 years of age," Rooney said. "I am not 35 or 36 where you are thinking, 'Can you get back from it?'

"I will just keep working. I have said before that I will not stop playing for England and then think of going to Dubai for a few days in the international break. I will turn up when called upon and be ready."

Southgate's decision was borne out of the desire to better cope with Slovenia's strengths and was spoken about at great length with Rooney on Sunday evening, becoming apparent to teammates when working on squad shape on the eve of the game.

The decision may be accepted and understood, but the repercussions will include increased talk of how best to utilise Rooney's talents at a time when he is learning to adapt to physical changes.

"I feel fine," he said. "But Ryan Giggs at 30 wasn't the same player at 18. And he played till he was 40.

"There's lots of examples out there you can use -- players re-evaluate and work out the best way to move forwards. I'm sure that will happen with me."

Asked if a settled position would help, the man deployed in midfield by England and further forward at United said: "It would help, of course. But that's the manager's decision where they want me to play.

"I am not naive in terms of thinking that I am still a 20-year-old who could do what I could do when I was 20.

"I understand that. I feel my game is different to that of a 20-year-old, but I also think I have qualities that can help move this team forward.

"So it is a moment which I am in at the minute but, as I keep saying, I have to show the right attitude, be positive and make sure I am supportive of my teammates."

The willingness to fight was furthered by last week's meeting with members of the triumphant England side of 1966.

Rooney has been unable to inspire his country beyond the quarter-finals of a major tournament, yet he still dreams of glory as England look to qualify for the World Cup in Russia -- his last shot at international silverware.

"I met a few of the '66 lads last week and, of course, that is how you want to be remembered: successful and winning things," Rooney said. "It hasn't happened since then but I always give everything for England.

"Record goal scorer, I am proud of that. I have given everything and will carry on giving everything and try and help myself and my teammates alongside those '66 lads."

It is an ambition as admirable as his desire to help his country's cause in whatever way he can.

"After the summer it would have been easy for me to walk away and say 'that's it, I've had enough' but that's not me," Rooney added.

"As I keep saying, I feel I have a lot to offer and I've made that clear, certainly up until Russia if we get there. That's what I want to fulfil.

"Listen, I'm not suddenly going to turn round and say 'I'm not playing, I'm not going to turn up' -- I know I can be a big help for the other players, whether I'm playing or not, both on and off the pitch."

Liverpool have lost a key midfielder ahead of Monday night's clash

Liverpool have suffered a blow after losing Georginio Wijnaldum to injury.

The Dutch midfielder picked up a hamstring problem on international duty and was forced off during Holland's defeat by France, report the Manchester Evening News.

And the midfielder, who arrived from Newcastle in the summer, is an early doubt ahead of Liverpool's clash with United on Monday.

Jose Mourinho is hoping to have Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Luke Shaw available for the game at Anfield after both remained at Carrington during the international break
.
Mkhitaryan hasn't featured since the 2-1 defeat to Manchester City last month because of a thigh injury but has now returned to training.

Shaw last played in the 3-1 defeat to Watford and was granted a break from training over the weekend to travel to Paris. Phil Jones is still recovering from a knee ligament injury.

Liverpool's January transfer targets: Michael Keane and Geoffrey Kondogbia linked with Anfield move

Liverpool's January transfer targets: Michael Keane and Geoffrey Kondogbia linked with Anfield move

Liverpool entered the international break just two points behind league leaders Manchester City after a four-match winning streak.

Jurgen Klopp's side have convincingly swept aside reigning Premier League champions Leicester City, Arsenal and Chelsea as well as taking a point off an undefeated Tottenham side at White Hart Lane.

However, there are still the same concerns over Liverpool's inability to keep a clean sheet, something which will undoubtedly hinder a title challenge. The Merseyside club have conceded the most goals in the league's top 10 and are on course to concede over 50 goals this season.

Liverpool resisted the urge to dip into the January transfer market last season but if their form continues and they are still in the title picture after the busy Christmas period, Klopp may use the window to bring in reinforcements.

                                                       October 17, 2016, 7:00pm

With the help of our friends at Football Whispers, whose unique algorithm tracks the likelihood of deals being done, here are a few of names who are likely to be linked with a move to Anfield…

                                                         Niklas Sule

Current Club: TSG Hoffenheim

Position: Centre-back

Linked By: Daily Mail and Bild

Current Football Whispers Rating: 1.9

Highest Football Whispers Rating:  3.6 (23rd May 2016)

Towards the end of May the Daily Mail linked the 21-year-old with a move to Liverpool but nothing materialised as the club opted to bring in Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan.
However, according to German outlet Bild, the Reds interest in the centre-back appears to have been reignited. The report suggests Liverpool are exploring the possibility of signing the German in January in the hope the 6'5" giant puts an end to their defensive aerial struggles.

This was eluded to on Monday Night Football by Jurgen Klopp when appearing as a guest last month, stating that the team are notorious for conceding an alarming amount of their chances from crosses and set pieces.

Sule, an Olympic silver medalist, has caught the eye of many of Europe's big clubs due to his imposing presence, reading of the game and ability on the ball as well as his defensive intelligence. This season so far he's won 13 tackles, six aerial duels and has managed 10 interceptions. Another standout trait, and one that may make him an attractive proposition for Liverpool, is his passing ability. On average he makes 54 passes per 90 minutes and has a 90 per cent pass success rate.

Another appealing trait is his discipline. Despite Bundesliga's frantic pace, he rarely commits fouls. Having appeared 33 times in the league during the 2015/16 season, he picked up just four yellow cards and has carried on in a similar vein this season, featuring five times in the league without picking up a caution.

                                                      Michael Keane

Current Club: Burnley

Position: Centre-back

Linked By: Kop Talk

Current Football Whispers Rating: 1.0

Highest Football Whispers Rating:  1.4 (3rd October 2016)

Keane's rise has been meteoric. The Stockport-born defender started his career at Manchester United and made his debut for his boyhood club in the League Cup in 2012. He then made his Premier League debut for the Red Devils in August 2014.
Sandwiched between these two debuts for United were loan spells at Leicester, Derby County and Blackburn Rovers. However, it wasn't until a loan move to Burnley in September 2014, which was made permanent in January 2015 for a reported £2.5m, that Keane's career started to develop.

He missed just two Championship games last season as Burnley won promotion back to the Premier League and his form alerted the likes of Leicester, who reportedly had a £17m bid turned down, as well as Chelsea, whose reported £25m bid in August was rejected before the London club moved on to sign David Luiz.

One of his strengths is just how dominant he is in the air, winning 15 aerial duels in his seven league games this season. Burnley may be a defensive side but Keane manages to complete 81 per cent of the 31 passes he attempts on average per 90 minutes.

Keane's imposing performances so far this season, coupled with the fact he has less than two years remaining on his current deal, mean Burnley may have a task keeping hold of their centre-back in January.

Alternatively, Klopp may opt to stick with Dejan Lovren. The Croat's form since the appointment of the German has been close to that which convinced Liverpool to pay £20m to sign him from Southampton in 2014.

The 27-year-old has won 22 aerial duels and made 13 interceptions already and of the 60 passes he attempts on average per 90 minutes he completes 84 per cent of them. There are signs of an understanding starting to form with Joel Matip at the heart of the defence.

                                                     Leonardo Pavoletti

Current Club: Genoa

Position: Striker

Linked By: Tuttomercatoweb

Current Football Whispers Rating: 1.4

Highest Football Whispers Rating: 1.9 (7th October 2016)

The 27-year-old striker had a bit of a nomadic career before finding a home at Serie A team Genoa. Since making his debut in 2006, Pavoletti has played for nine teams but it wasn't until his €4m move to Genoa, and the 14 goals and three assists in just 1,917 minutes throughout the 2015/16 season that big teams started to take note. Italian striker Pavoletti is a brute in the air and since joining Genoa and has won four aerial duels per 90 minutes.

However, he's far from just a target-man and he doesn't just rely on crosses to score his goals. He's industrious, he work's hard when not in possession, a necessity in a Klopp side, and his movement in the final third makes him a real goal threat.

If Liverpool did want an aerial presence in their arsenal then Pavoletti is one of the few who provides that as well as work-rate. However at the moment, a move doesn't look imminent with the Football Whispers index score ranking the move a 1.4 out of 5.

                                                 Geoffrey Kondogbia

urrent Club: Inter Milan

Position: Midfielder

Linked By: Web Calcio

Current Football Whispers Rating: 3.5

Highest Football Whispers Rating: 3.6 (9th October 2016)

Geoffrey Kondogbia and Paul Pogba. That was supposed to be the France midfield for Euro 2016 when both players initially broke through in 2012. It was almost a formality but after Kondogbia failed to settle at Inter Milan following his €31m move in the summer of 2015 he missed out on the squad entirely.
New Nerazzurri boss Frank de Boer has openly criticised Kondogbia's performances this season and the entire San Siro applauded when De Boer substituted the player against Bologna after only 28 minutes.

The midfielder has failed to feature in three of Inter's last five Serie A matches with Ever Banega, Joao Mario and Gary Medel being the first choice trio ahead of him.

Kondogbia would be a welcome addition to the Liverpool midfield as the club look to shore up defensively but not limit their attacking ability. Throughout his entire career Kondogbia has averaged 2.7 tackles and 1.5 interceptions with 87 per cent of his 45 passes finding a teammate per 90 minutes.

Comparisons to Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira have been made and it's easy to see why. He has the sort of playing profile which would see him thrive in the Premier League. With the Football Whispers index score ranking the move a 3.5 it will be interesting to see how it plays out as January approaches.

Georginio Wijnaldum injury scare for Liverpool ahead of MNF Manchester United clash

Georginio Wijnaldum injury scare for Liverpool ahead of MNF Manchester United clash

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum faces a race to be fit for the Monday Night Football showdown with Manchester United after picking up an injury on international duty.

The Dutch international started against France in Monday night's World Cup qualifying 1-0 defeat, only to limp off after an hour with what appeared to be a hamstring problem.

After some treatment by the physio on the pitch, he was substituted and replaced by Bas Dost.
France were impressive in Amsterdam as they showed why they are favourites in Group A qualifying with a stunning long-range strike from Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba securing the points for the visitors.

Liverpool vs Man Utd

October 17, 2016, 7:00pm
The Netherlands, without the injured Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben, had already suffered an early setback when Quincy Promes, who scored twice on Friday, was replaced by Memphis Depay after only 16 minutes.

But the sight of Wijnaldum clutching his right leg will be a big concern for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp who will be desperate to have all his players available when they face their fierce rivals on Monday night at Anfield in a match live on Sky Sports 1 HD.
Wijnaldum, who signed from Newcastle for £25m in the summer, has impressed for the Reds this season having started every league game.

Liverpool, sitting fourth in the Premier League, welcome Jose Mourinho's men on MNF with their opponents two places below and two points behind.

HULL CITY 0 - 2 CHELSEA match report

HULL CITY 0 - 2 CHELSEA match report

Match Report

Willian’s second goal of the season and Diego Costa’s sixth meant a happy return to winning ways on Humberside and importantly, a new-look defence kept a clean sheet.

Antonio Conte reacted to the defeats against Liverpool and Arsenal by making changes, both in personnel and formation. In came Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses for their first league starts of the season, with Branislav Ivanovic and Cesc Fabregas moved to the bench, and out went the four-man defence.

Instead David Luiz played in the centre of a back three with Cesar Azpilicueta and Gary Cahill flanking him. Alonso and Moses were the wing-backs.

Hull were off the back of big defeats against Liverpool and Arsenal too, so which team was able to steady their ship better was likely to be the key to this game, and it took until the second half for the Blues to properly click, but once we did we looked like the team from the opening month of the season. Both goals came midway through the second period.

The Tigers’ caretaker boss Mike Phelan retained the 4-1-4-1 shape he has been fielding and Thibaut Courtois was the first keeper called into action, making a sharp save from a firmly struck free-kick by Robert Snodgrass. David Luiz had pulled down Dieumerci Mbokani.

There was concern for our reshaped defence when Mbokani got between Azpilicueta and David Luiz to be first to a long ball but the Congolese let it escape his control.

Hull had the bulk of the ball in the opening quarter of an hour but then Willian and N’Golo Kante began to make their presence felt, with the Brazilian firing a shot across the face of goal.

At the other end, Hull, after a couple of bites at the cherry had a Ryan Mason shot deflected wide before Willian, having to stretch just too much, could not get enough purchase on his second attempt of the game. Cahill then bounced a shot from distance wide after the Blues’ best passage of play.

There were 25 minutes gone and the contest on Humberside was simmering gently, although Chelsea were improving. Alonso did well to win a corner with a cross when tightly policed and Hazard attacked the heart of the Hull team with menace but was halted by the last defender.

From then until just before the end of first-half added time, most of the play was Chelsea’s. Alonso headed wide before we attacked at pace through Moses, Diego Costa and Hazard but could not manufacture a shooting chance. We also tested the home defence with a free-kick and a corner but they held firm.

Just before the whistle a move broke down on halfway and suddenly there was space for Hull. Courtois dived and successfully pushed wide a long-range drive from Mason. It was our goalkeeper who had needed to make the two best saves yet.

Hull’s attacks had come down the middle. With Moses and Alonso dropping to make it a back-five when the Blues didn’t have the ball, the space left out wide that caused such problems at Arsenal was not there, but could we find enough going forward for three points today?

Alonso did work David Marshall between the Hull posts soon after the restart but in truth his shot was tame, unlike the one from Hazard not long after. This was Chelsea’s best effort yet, the Belgian wrong-footing the defence by putting on the brakes and then smashing goalwards, Marshall saved.

We continued to peg Hull back and our ball-winning ability in the home team’s half will have been pleasing Conte, but the killer ball was proving elusive.

On 57 minutes Kante looked to have found it, sending Diego Costa away down the right. The striker raced past the keeper and shot hard from out wide but a touch off Jake Livermore sent it onto the post. The ball fell for Kante. Surely this was 1-0. But not known for his ability in front of goal, the Frenchman fired over and could not believe his miss.

The reprieve came just four minutes later when Hull, again sloppy in the middle of the park as they had been frequently, were made to pay.

Willian was involved early in the attack and Diego Costa’s battling was crucial. Willian went outside at first but then stepped back into the middle and planted a peach of a curling shot beyond Marshall who did not move.

That opening goal was all that was needed for the Blues to shift into top gear.

The determined Diego Costa had a low shot saved before he scored a deserved second on 67 minutes. Matic made the initial run down the middle and had his attempt saved but when the ball came back to the Premier League’s top scorer, Diego smacked it into the same area of the net only just shaken by Willian.

Moses and Alonso were by now far more wingers than full-backs and every time anyone in a blue shirt ran at Hull they caused problems. Willian had a claim for a penalty when his trailing leg was caught by a challenge after he was back-heeled through by Diego Costa.

Oscar and Pedro were introduced late on, as was Nathaniel Chalobah for his Chelsea league debut. Among those going off, Moses’s contribution was especially appreciated by the travelling support who ended the game in fine voice and with a welcome result to cheer.

Chelsea (3-4-3): Courtois; Azpilicueta, David Luiz, Cahill; Moses (Pedro 85), Kante, Matic, Alonso; Willian (Chalobah 89), Diego Costa, Hazard (Oscar 81).

burnley 0-1 arsenal-match-report

burnley-arsenal-match-report

SUMMARY

Laurent Koscielny scored with virtually the last kick of the game as Arsenal celebrated Arsène Wenger’s 20th anniversary as manager with a dramatic victory at Burnley.
For large periods it looked as though this would be a frustrating afternoon - but the Gunners kept plugging away and found their reward right at the end of second-half stoppage time, when Koscielny scrambled home from close range.
Sean Dyche’s committed hosts had made it difficult throughout and, after spurning some second-half chances, it looked as though Wenger’s side would travel back to London with just a point.
Cue the late drama, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s shot somehow turned in by the body of Koscielny. Burnley appealed for handball, and then offside, but the goal stood.
It all means that Arsenal go into the international break having won five league matches on the spin for the first time since October 2015. In all honesty, the Gunners were probably a touch fortunate to come away with three points against a Clarets side who looked good value for a point - and could have had more had Michael Keane’s second-half header not hit the crossbar.
This was a different, more rugged showing from a team that had stylishy swept both Chelsea and Basel aside recently. But the boss has spoken of his side adding maturity to their game, and they demonstrated that here, fighting until the end and getting their reward at the death.
Wenger has taken charge of 1,130 games as Arsenal boss - few will have had such a dramatic ending.

SETTING THE SCENE

Pretty much all the pre-match talk had centred around Wenger’s anniversary. Not usually one for looking back, the boss did reflect that “for me to go through this history has been a privilege”, before stressing the need for his side to prepare well for this trip to Lancashire.
Wenger actually began his Arsenal tenure just 15 miles from Turf Moor, presiding over a 2-0 win at Blackburn Rovers on October 12, 1996.
His side beat Basel by the same scoreline on Wednesday night, so it wasn’t a surprise to see the same outfield players start here. The one change saw Petr Cech come in for David Ospina.
That meant Alexis - compared to Luis Suarez by Wenger pre-match - continued to spearhead the attack.
Arsenal came into this unbeaten in their last 25 games against newly-promoted clubs, but Burnley would pose difficult opposition - they had only lost one of their previous 17 home matches in 2016, and beat Liverpool at Turf Moor in August.

FIRST HALF

Fast, incisive starts have been a hallmark of Arsenal’s recent good form - and they began on the front foot here too, with Alexis’ fourth-minute shot flicking off the boot of Theo Walcott and spinning just wide of Tom Heaton’s post.
The pair combined again soon after but, after finding a yard of space inside the box, Walcott could only drag his effort off target.
Arsenal were on top but were struggling to make clear-cut chances. And when they did break through the congested midfield, they were let down by uncharacteristically poor touches from Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla.
The hosts had created little throughout but, from nothing, spurned the clearest opportunity of the half just before the break. Matthew Lowton wasn’t closed down and delivered an inviting right-wing cross for Sam Vokes, who inexplicably nodded wide when unmarked in the penalty area.
Wenger’s side - with 64 per cent possession in the first period - went back on the attack but continued to find chances hard to come by against their committed hosts.

SECOND HALF

Arsenal, led by the lively Alexis, began the second half with fresh impetus and a more incisive edge to their play. Walcott slipped went sent clear by the Chilean, before Alexis drew a superb reflex save from Heaton at the goalkeeper’s near post.
Ozil was next to go close, seeing his goal-bound shot just about blocked to safety after Alexis and Alex Iwobi had combined to tee him up.
Burnley had been penned in their own half for much of the second half’s first 15 minutes - but they gave Arsenal a reminder of their aerial danger when Johann Berg Gudmundson's header forced Cech into a full-length stop.
Alexis responded with a fierce volley that clipped the post on its way wide, but Burnley went closer still soon after, Michael Keane powerfully meeting Berg Gudmundsson's but seeing his header rebound off the crossbar.
The hosts sent plenty of men forward for another set-piece late on - and they were nearly punished for it when Arsenal broke at speed. Alexis eventually worked the ball to Walcott, who bent his effort just wide of the far post.
That looked like being the final chance - but there would be late drama.
It came right at the end of stoppage time. Walcott flicked on Alexis’ cross, Oxlade-Chamberlain knocked it towards goal and the ball just about squirmed underneath the body of Tom Heaton, with Koscielny getting the final touch.
The home side screamed for offside, the away supporters bundled to the front of the David Fishwick Stand to join in the wild celebrations.
Somehow, Arsenal had won it. Happy anniversary, boss.

Arsenal Transfer News: Latest Rumours, Fresh Players Linked with Gunners Move

Julian Draxler's agent has confirmed the player will "definitely leave Wolfsburg" in the summer, news Arsenal may find interesting, as the Gunners remain linked with the quality Germany international.

Draxler's agent Fabio Parisi told Italian publication Tuttosport (h/t David Wright of the Sunday Express) how his client, a target for Juventus, will be on the move next summer. In fact, Parisi revealed a previous bid from Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain, while also talking up Juve's interest. Draxler has even met with Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri:

"Max Allegri had spoken to Draxler, they were in sync and there was an immediate rapport between them.
Wolfsburg have strong owners, but unfortunately for the German fans, everyone wants to leave there. Over the summer Draxler was on the verge of joining Paris Saint-Germain, who had offered nearly €65m (£59m).
He will definitely leave Wolfsburg at the end of the season. He would’ve gladly run to join Juve and is the ideal trequartista for Allegri."

Juve's interest sounds strong, but the Gunners have a lengthy history of links with Draxler. One of the most recent came back in July, when ESPN (h/t Samuel Lovett of The Independent) reported Arsenal had bid £43 million for the Bundesliga star

Yet this was far from the first time the north London club had expressed a willingness to purchase Draxler. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was even said to be close to a deal worth £30 million for the then-Schalke 04 sensation back in January 2014, according to John Cross of the Daily Mirror.

Cross had reported earlier in the year how Wenger wanted to turn Draxler into a centre-forward, the way he once did with Dutchman Robin van Persie. The latter had arrived from Feyenoord in 2004 as a right-winger, but Wenger eventually shaped the gifted prospect into the perfect mix of a No. 9 and No. 10, a deadly penalty-box finisher with the creative instincts to also supply goals.

Draxler has all the attributes to enjoy the same transition. He's tall, quick, skilful and boasts a fierce shot. The 23-year-old also possesses keen technical ability, including a stylish range of passing.

Wenger has been searching for an attacker boasting all those qualities to lead his forward line for some time. His current attempts to find one are seeing wide forward Alexis Sanchez moved through the middle, a switch not always running smoothly, despite Sanchez scoring five times already this season, per WhoScored.com.

Should Wenger pay a club-record fee for Draxler?

Yet Arsenal may need a replacement for Sanchez sooner than they think. The Chilean is contracted until 2018, and the Gunners are anxious for him to sign an extension. However, Sanchez reportedly wants £250,000 per week, according to Matt Hughes of the Sunday Times.

Still young, and with as much natural talent as any forward in the game, Draxler would be the perfect project for Wenger to develop into the focal point of his free-flowing side.
Wenger Keen on Young French Defender
Wenger may need to eventually refresh things up front, but he's already looking for a new star in defence, according to reports from Italy. The prospect in question is 17-year-old Nice academy graduate Malang Sarr.

Italian publication Tuttomercatoweb (Metro's Lee Thomas-Mason) has reported the Gunners and Serie A outfit AC Milan are keen on Sarr. But it's Wenger making the most concrete moves, having already sent a scout to watch the French youngster.

It says a lot that a player who only made his first-team debut earlier this season is already courting such strong interest. Yet Sarr has earned rave reviews from the start.
UEFA's official site praised both his versatility and athleticism after Sarr netted the winner against Rennes in Ligue 1 back in August: "Sarr lined up at left centre-back on Sunday, although he can play any defensive position. He is strong in the air, as Rennes found to their cost."

Such flexibility should appeal to Wenger, who needs to improve Arsenal's defensive depth. Centre-back Per Mertesacker is now 32, while Brazilian Gabriel has struggled to settle in the Premier League. Meanwhile, 21-year-old Englishman Calum Chambers has been loaned out to Middlesbrough.

Should Wenger target more young defenders?

As for the full-backs, both Kieran Gibbs and Carl Jenkinson have been frozen out since Nacho Monreal and Hector Bellerin took over the starting berths. At least former Bolton Wanderers youngster Rob Holding has impressed since signing in the summer.

Wenger's record recruiting the best talents from France was once exemplary. He may have slowed somewhat since the days of landing Patrick Vieira, Emmanuel Petit and Robert Pires, but the manager's recent record signing defenders from France has been excellent.

Both full-back Bacary Sagna and centre-back Laurent Koscielny proved shrewd buys. Sarr could be next in line if Gunners scouts tell Wenger he should step up his interest.

The latest links suggest Wenger, a manager whose contract expires at the end of this season, is still committed to building a young side and safeguarding Arsenal's future.
